Vienna VA Real Estate, Vienna area and Community Information

Vienna, Virginia, is a town of about 17,000 residents, west of the Washington beltway (I-495) and north of I-66, in Fairfax County. It lies just to the southwest of Tyson's Corner, the home of a major regional shopping mall. Vienna is well-served by a network of freeways that connect Washington D.C. to the east and Dulles International Airport to the west. In 2013, CNN/Money rated Vienna third on a list of the 100 best places to live in the U.S. Its highly rated schools are one of the reasons for the community being held in high esteem.

History

Settlers of European descent first arrived here in the 1740s. For over a century, the community was named Ayr in honor of Ayr, Scotland. In the 1850s, a physician named William Hendrick agreed to live and practice in Ayr on the condition that the town would consent to being renamed after his hometown of Vienna, New York. In 1861, the Battle of Vienna became one of the earliest armed conflicts in the Civil War.
