Vienna History

Vienna's long history stretches back to the early days of colonial America. The first recorded settler in the Vienna area was Colonel Charles Broadwater. The colonel, a prominent public figure, settled within the area in 1754. Colonel Broadwater's initial settlement was expanded with the addition of his offspring and their subsequent marriages. Within years of Broadwater's settlement in the Vienna area, the land became known by the name of Ayr Hill, in honor of the homeland of the colonel's son-in-law, John Hunter. As the population of Ayr Hill grew so grew a desire to change the area's name. In 1854, a family of immigrants, known by the name of Hendrick, successfully campaigned that the name of the town be changed to Vienna. In 1859, the addition of the railroad ushered in a new world of possibility for the small village. In the years following the introduction of the railroad and the country's Civil War, Vienna experience an upsurge in growth. Many settlers were attracted to Vienna because of its mild climate, fertile soil, and proximity to the nation's capital.

Over the years, the population of Vienna has increased as have the modern conveniences available to its citizens. Today, Vienna is a wonderful town with a strong sense of community pride and a clear vision of its future. The town works to preserve its heritage, all the while, encouraging the growth necessary to thrive in the future.
