History

Farrcroft is located in the historic Old Town section of the City of Fairfax. Farrcroft homes are set upon land first settled in the 1700s, when both George Washington and George Mason lived in the Fairfax area. A five-million acre land grant was provided to Lord Fairfax, who brought farmers inland from the Tidewater region in search of fresh and fertile ground. During the 1800s, the Farr family acquired a large tract in the City of Fairfax and built their family home. In the early 1900s, a second house (now known as the Farr House) was built on the estate. During the 1990s, the Farr estate was subdivided to allow the development of Farrcroft on property including the Farr House, which has been updated to become the Farrcroft Community Center.  The original family home is still maintained by the Farr family on the remainder of the old estate, adjacent to Farrcroft. Residents of Farrcroft share a distinguished heritage and access to a property designated as a National Historic Site.

Parks and Recreation

Parks and ponds are sprinkled liberally throughout the community. Farrcroft amenities include a full-sized swimming pool, tot lots, walking paths, and a park and pavilion set amidst a wooded landscape. Within the City of Fairfax, there are over two dozen parks occupying over 200 acres of land. The largest of these, the 48-acre Daniels Run Park (adjacent to Farrcroft), offers even more trails for hikers and bikers. Van Dyke Park, with playground and tennis courts, is directly across the street from Farrcroft and part of the Stacy Sherwood Community Center complex.

Attractions and Activities

Residents who appreciate history will want to explore the nearby Blenheim Estate. In the springtime, every two years, the War Between the States comes alive during a Civil War encampment. The unmistakeable smell of gunpowder fills the air during the firing demonstrations. Volunteers dressed in period uniforms excite onlookers with a precision muster drill.

Across Main Street from Farrcroft is the Fairfax Museum & Visitors Center which features artifacts, documents, and frequently changing displays and demonstrations focused on the history and changing culture of the City of Fairfax.

Events

Every February, Old Town Fairfax hosts the Chocolate Lovers Festival, and it is attended by many who have invested in Farrcroft community VA real estate. Mouth-watering chocolate treats await every attendee. Stand in amazement as you study the intricate work of the sculptors who have entered the chocolate sculpture contest.

Spotlight on the Arts was founded in 1985 as a collaboration between the City of Fairfax and George Mason University. The annual Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts Festival aims to enhance awareness of the many arts and cultural opportunities in the City and encourages expansion of the arts through support for fledgling arts organizations in the community. Spotlight offers six different scholarships to high school seniors to study arts at Mason and Northern Virginia Community College.

The City of Fairfax Government sponsors or supports a wide range of events, activities and organizations to create an exciting and vibrant life-style.  These include Christmas, New Years Eve, and 4th of July, and October Fest celebrations; the Fairfax Band, Chorus, and Symphony Orchestra; and sporting and cultural events during every season.
